Hypothesis: this acts as a transgression shorthand function. The secularist and the naive spiritualist both disrespect the supernatural world, by denying it or by treating it with a kind of naive contempt, and so we can establish why the narrator has been shunted into an alternate reality consisting of dim lighting and abandoned-ish interiors economically.
that’s a fair assessment, with the note that it sometimes establishes the narrator’s ethos in some horror stories (stereotypically Japanese, at least to my immediate recollection) where the narrator is an observer and someone else they know transgresses, leaving the narrator to clean up the mess.
